"First step to freedom"

Nelson Mandela Statue in Cape Town

Providing creative inspiration in the Atrium is the larger-than-life wire art statue of Nelson Mandela crafted by gifted artist Jeff Mwazha titled "First step to freedom". Using only compressed chicken wire, Mwazha has uncannily managed to capture the innate sense of humour that has often sustained the great man through a lifetime of struggle.

Created with superior technical skill, a transcendent artistic vision and avoidance of superficial embellishment, his creations speak volumes with direct, honest simplicity. The statue has become iconic of Mandela within the context of Mandela Rhodes Place providing a meeting point for many visitors to the City wanting to pay tribute to this legendary leader.
